TWENTY-ONE

Paris, 2020

Parker rubbed his eyes as he woke. He turned on his side and stretched his arm out beside him. His hand hit the sheets and he felt around for a moment before he realized that Noriana was gone from the bed. He opened his mouth as wide as he could to vocally yawn before looking around the small room. The bathroom door stood ajar.

He rolled off the bed, placed each foot down on the floor, and then staggered towards the open door to the toilet. The door creaked open to reveal that she was not in the cottage with him. Though before he reached the toilet, he saw his shoes had moved from the floor to the vanity bench by the bathroom door. A note was sticking out from the shoes.

His instant reaction was for his heart to drop past his stomach, the feeling as if he’d just rounded the hill of a treacherous roller coaster.

Relax, Parker. You're in your room for goodness’ sake, he told himself as he took the note out and unfolded it. It wasn't even on brown paper, and it would be ridiculous for the note-leaving stalker to have followed them here and left a note inside the room of their bed and breakfast while he was sleeping in the bed. Unless of course the stalker was Nori. He sighed and shook his head. Stop. It was an irrational thought. Paranoia.

He opened the note. It read: "Went to work. See you soon." A kiss mark created with red lipstick signed the note. He traced over the lips with his finger and welcomed a warmness that washed over him. Underneath the note, inside his shoe, was a ticket that read, "Chateau de Versailles, Billet individual chateau avec audio guide. 13,50 euro."

How did I get so lucky? He raced to get ready for the day. In the tourist books he'd read, all of them said that the lines to get your tickets into the castle of Versailles were always ridiculously long. He had been dreading the hour or more wait he'd have to even gain access to the castle. Now he didn’t have to.
